Town and country: the best of both worlds

We have accepted an offer for summer 2018 to go to Switzerland but happy to discuss plans for autumn school holidays 2018 - maybe a city break in one of our favourite places (Paris, Berlin, London) or open to offer suggestions!

If you are looking for a mixture of city life and fantastic countryside and coastline then look no further than York. The historic capital of the North of England York is a historic gem surrounded by areas of outstanding natural beauty: the North Yorks Moors and coast and Yorkshire Dales.

York is the capital of the Yorkshire Region, heralded in the Top 10 destinations in the World by Lonely Planet in 2013 http://www.theguardian.com/travel/2013/sep/03/yorkshire. Home to the start of the Tour de France in 2014.

York has been an important city since Roman times, we were invaded and settled by the Vikings and central York retains much of its medieval character today. The city and surrounding area are home to many historic buildings, museums and monuments – Roman, Viking, medieval, English Civil War, C18th and Victorian.

Today York is very popular with tourists. The city has a pedestrianised city centre housed within medieval walls or 'ramparts' which you can walk around - making a tour of the city. The Rivers Ouse and Fosse cut through the city centre - and there are pleasant river-side walks, cycle paths and pubs/ cafes. Many of the medieval streets remain in the centre - making wandering around the town a pleasure.

Our home is a 3 storey Victorian property with many period features including fireplaces for cosy fires in winter. The street is a quiet side street, home to several B&Bs, within 10 mins walk of City Centre and 20 minutes walk from the main rail station.

We have four main bedrooms: two double beds and two children's bedrooms each sleeping two children in full-size bunk beds (and an extra single futon if needed). This means there's plenty of space for families larger groups - or to invite extra family/ guests to join you for part of your stay as some of our previous exchange guests have done.

This house has been our family home for 10 years and has been thoroughly updated to include all the usual facilities - washing machine, microwave, tv/dvd etc. Wifi is available, We have a good selection of DVDs (including children's), board games and lots of guides and maps for cycling/walking locally.

We'd love it if you could take care of our cat Toffee - he's easy to care for and he's very sociable and child-friendly.

On the first floor there is a large master bathroom with freestanding cast iron bath, and a separate shower room. There is another small bathroom on the second floor. There is a small courtyard garden to the rear of the property where you can sit in privacy. We are situated 2 mins walk from a large Victorian park with a duck pond and play equipment and a cafe, so there's plenty of space for children to play outside nearby.

More like a town than a city in size, York is surrounded by villages and farmland - great for bike rides, runs and short walks.

York’s main tourist website is http://www.visityork.org

Wider Yorkshire region tourism information can be found at http://www.yorkshire.com

There are literally dozens of options for day trips around York - including to the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors (both stunning National Parks) and Fountains Abbey (UNESCO Heritage site). Brimham Rocks, Richmond Castle, Helmsley, Bolton Abbey and the stunning Yorkshire Dales (valleys) are within easy reach (for an overview of walks in the Dales see http://www.theguardian.com/travel/2012/may/02/top-10-walks-yorkshire-dales).

Most of these places you can visit by train or bus but a car is advisable to make the most of your trip - and we are happy to share our car with exchange guests.

The beautiful North Yorks Coast coast is an hour away by car. Filey is great for families with miles of unspoilt beach and the usual seaside attractions. Picturesque Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay are 1-1.5 hrs away, and the larger seaside resort of Scarborough is an hour by rail.

Even the Lake District - the most stunning corner of England - can be reached in 2 hours (North and East Lakes - e.g. Keswick, Ullswater, Central Lakes 2.5 hrs, Southern/Western 2.5-3hrs).

If you prefer city life and cultural attractions then you can reach Leeds in 20 mins or Newcastle, Sheffield, Wakefield in under an hour. Manchester is 90 mins and Liverpool 2 hrs. All of these cities have great museums, galleries, theatres, shopping etc. It's also a great base for exploring the UK's major cities by rail: London (2hrs) and Edinburgh (2.5 hrs).

Nearby Yorkshire Sculpture Park won UK Museum of the Year in 2014 - it has free entry, fantastic cafes (or great spaces for picnics) and a changing programme of contemporary and modern art exhibitions.

With excellent train and road connections - York is ideally placed to visit the North.
