House in Aberdeen on the coast of SCOTLAND

We live in a traditional granite house, built in 1905, a grey and sparkling stone that is characteristic of Aberdeen. There are three bedrooms and a loft that can also be used as a fourth bedroom, two public rooms, kitchen, bathroom and separate toilet. There are two TVs downstairs both with Freeview (the BBC digital) and DVD players and one in the loft. Wi fi throughout.
Outside is a walled and private back garden with swing. Our neighbours are quiet but friendly. We have many toys, DVDs, books and CDs that you are welcome to use. There is central heating and an open fire - we hope it is too warm to use this in summer! Our house is a comfortable family home.
It is easy to get to the centre of town or to the beach from our house by car or bus. The countryside is 15 minutes away with many nice forest walks or further afield the mountains and rivers of the Grampians.

Our Neighbourhood

We live 5 five mins drive from the beach and Old Aberdeen, the historic old part of the city, site of the University of Aberdeen, over 500 years old. At the beach, you will find clean sand, a carnival, cafes, a large indoor skatepark and climbing wall, an ice rink and fun swimming pool. It is a short bus journey (or you can walk) to the centre of town where are many shops, restaurants, pubs, art gallery and museums. Aberdeen is a busy port, the oil capital of Europe and has a big student population with two universities so has a cosmopolitan feel to it. It is well known for its gardens and parks (the botanic gardens pictured is in the Duthie Park) and there are several worth visiting especially if you have children. Aberdeen is well located to visit more beaches north of the city, with Balmedie as the nearest, with miles of dunes and blue sea. Also distilleries with Speyside an hour away by car, the regions of many malt whiskies. It is easy and fun to visit these. There are many castles to visit, from Dunnotar, pictured in our photos, on the cliffs 15 miles from Aberdeen, to Balmoral, an hour away in Royal Deeside, one of the Queen's homes. We have leaflets about many more, all worth visiting. Scotland has wonderful scenery and here in the North, there are rolling green hills that are easily climbed to the Cairngorm mountains, picturesque to wander round or challenging to climb. We have all of the maps needed for visits. In the summer, there are Highland Games and Country shows where pipe bands play, highland dancing is performed and other Scottish fun activities are offered. In Aberdeen's parks are outdoor concerts and children's activities. We make the most of the summer here! All of our visitors like to visit Edinburgh or Glasgow and Inverness, all accessible for a day's visit or you can stay overnight in any of them. We leave our family rail card that gives cheap rail travel as it is hard to park in Edinburgh and Glasgow. It is better to drive to Inverness so you can explore the scenery and try to spot Nessie, the Loch Ness monster. Some families have gone to Skye, an island on the west coast and have camped and enjoyed the scenery and the views of island life.

About Our Family

There are four in our family, Gwen, a manager in the University of Aberdeen, Michael, a teacher and our two girls, Robyn (23) and Erin (14). We like nature, to swim, visit cities, galleries and museums, the girls like to shop and Michael likes bird watching. We have two spaniels, a black one named after Harry Potter and a brown one called Hamish.  They stay with family when we exchange houses.  We would be very happy to look after your pets.
We have lots of DVDs, CDs and books in the house. There are two televisions both with internet access and IPlayer (BBC programmes). There is unlimited WiFi throughout the house. A swing and garden furniture are available in the garden. There is a piano you can play during your visit.
We have a car for you to use.
We have had exchanges to Belgium, France, Sweden, Austria, Denmark, the Netherlands, Canada and California.

Lifestyle

Michael, Gwen and Robyn work full time. Erin is at school in Aberdeen. Robyn is at Art School in Aberdeen. Both girls like swimming and cycling, dancing, music and their pet dogs!

Michael has lots of classical CDs you can listen to. He is a keen hill walker, painter and bird watcher too. Gwen is more into film and books and dog walking.
Our house is a comfortable family home with a garden to relax in.
We have done lots of exchanges since Robyn was 6. We love to travel especially in Europe and to visit friends elsewhere in the UK. Our last exchange was to Girona, Spain and was fantastic. We are open to interesting offers in Europe.
